Description
Replicate the phenomena
of German chemist Justus
von Liebig’s invention
in 1835: the process of
silvering glass surfaces. With
this unique kit, students will
see the oxidation reduction
reaction occur as colloidal
silver produces and adheres to the inside of the
provided Erlenmeyer flask. Students will also perform
Tollen’s test for the presence of aldehyes to see if the
“reducing sugar structure” needed to form the silver
mirror is present. After experimentation, students will
be able to see how this process has been applied to
significantly improve mirrors used in microscopes and
telescopes.
